Club-rush is a tallish sedge that can form extensive colonies, as it has in large areas of the 3-foot-deep zone of Lake Okeechobee. It is grazed by ducks and wading birds. Cellulosa is one of the 30 species that comprise the Eleocharis genus occurring in Florida (Wunderlin, 1998). Club-rush is located in the southeastern U.S.; in PR; and the Virgin Islands (Kartesz, 1999).

Club-rush is a sedge. From rhizomes; stems circular, to 4-ft. tall, to 1/4 in. wide; leaf blades none, just sheaths wrapping the stem at the base; sheath top triangular with long tip, lower sheath loose; inflorescence a single cylindrical club-like spikelet, about as wide as the stem, tan, to 2 in. long, many white flowers, scales broad, scale tops rounded; nutlets rounded, pointed, with surrounding bristles.
