Researchers Associated
with the
Center for Aquatic and Invasive Plants

Alison M. Fox, Ph.D.

Associate Professor,
Agronomy

Discipline Specialization:

Dr. Fox researches the ecology and management of plants that are invading aquatic and upland natural areas. A native of the British Isles where she studied the control of submersed weeds in rivers and canals, she adapted such expertise, on arriving to Florida, to the improvement of herbicidal control of hydrilla in flowing water. This research has included extensive use of fluorescent dyes and frequent sampling of hydrilla tubers and she also investigated the biology and ecology of nuisance emergent species such as giant cutgrass (Zizaniopsis miliacea).

As her research program evolves, Fox is climbing out of the water, with studies of a recently introduced invader of wetlands, wetland nightshade (Solanum tampicense), and an ornamental shrub that is escaping into upland habitats, coral ardisia (Ardisia crenata). She also teaches an undergraduate class on biological invasions, and graduate classes on aquatic plants and weed ecology. Fox is very active in professional organizations, having been president of the national Aquatic Plant Management Society, a director of the Weed Science Society of America, and a director of the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council.
