Dear Colleague:

We write to ask your assistance in addressing the increasing problems of invasive exotic species in the United States.

An accompanying page on this Web site is a letter to Vice-President Albert Gore, Jr., to be mailed some time in March 1997. This letter asks Vice-President Gore to help form a Presidential Commission to recommend new strategies to prevent and to manage invasions by harmful exotic species in natural areas and agricultural lands. If prevention of new invasions and regional management of existing invasions are ever to become realities, it is vital that the problem of invasive exotic species receive the attention it deserves from the federal government. The 21st century holds the clear threat of further devastating invasions unless a coordinated national effort is put in place.

If you regulate, manage, or conduct research on harmful exotic species and would like to add your name to this letter, please fill out the form below and fax this page with your signature* to either Don C. Schmitz (fax 904-488-1254) or James T. Carlton (fax 860-572-5329) by March 14, 1997. (Please Note: your name will not be added to the letter unless we have your signature on file.) If fax is unavailable, please mail this form to: Don C. Schmitz, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, 2051 East Dirac Dr., Tallahassee, Florida 32310.

Questions? Please call Don at 904-488-5631 (schmitz_d@ngw.dep.state.fl.us) or James at 860-572-5359 (James.T.Carlton@Williams.edu).
